The Fifth Insight
19 Nov 2006

I was originally introduced to toning many years ago
through a couple of books which set out the notes and tones
associated with each chakra. The idea in this way of
working is that by sounding the ideal tone for that chakra,
any discord present in that area will come into alignment.
The logic of this is sound. (Hey! I can't help it if that's
a pun....) But lacking a musical background, I found it too
intimidating and troublesome to learn what an "A" sounds
like, etc., and pretty much gave it up except for sporadic
opportunities to do toning in a group. (And like all group
energy work, this is a truly fantastic experience!)

Then I began teaching Quantum-Touch® Basic Workshops. And
as everyone knows, you learn most thoroughly whatever it is
you teach.

-----------------------------------------
FIRST INSIGHT - The Body Knows What To Do
-----------------------------------------
This is one of the fundamental – perhaps THE fundamental –
insight offered by Quantum-Touch. To find out where to
start a Q-T session, you ask, "Where does it hurt?" and
place your hands there. To figure out where to go next, you
ask, "Has the pain moved?" and then move your hands there.

Applied to toning, I realized I didn't have to know an "A"
from a "G," an octave from a harmonic. All I had to do was
pick a vowel, any vowel, and sing it high, low or
in-between. I found that once I had initiated the sound, if
I simply "let my voice go" – that is, let it go wherever it
wanted without trying to control it – it would take off and
take on a richness and depth and do all sorts of things I
could never consciously replicate.

-----------------------------------------
SECOND INSIGHT – The Body Knows What To Do
-----------------------------------------
Originally, I did NOT care for breathy toning. My very
favorite kind of toning, and the kind I found most
effective, was what I'll call "classic" toning – that is,
taking a deep breath and then sounding a vowel for as
lonnnnnng as it lasts. The problem with this in the context
of Q-T is that you lose the powerful effect of the various
Q-T breathing rhythms.

But when I used the breathy tone, it was as if there was
not enough there, and what was there didn't last long
enough, to "let go" – the tone would stay the same from
start to finish, never taking on a life of its own the way
the classic style of toning seemed to.

One day, though, this changed for me. We had an
odd-numbered class, so I was exchanging with one of the
students. Wanting to set a good example, I began using the
breathy tone. As I continued for several minutes, I found
that my breath was taking off on its own just as if I were
doing the classic toning!

I realized that the only reason the breathy tone hadn't
worked for me was my attachment to what I was used to – the
classic endlessly drawn-out tone. Furthermore, I found the
energy was stronger with the breathy tone because of the
amplifying effect of the 2-6 rhythm I prefer to use for the
breathy toning.

Once again, I had learned – stop deciding on behalf of the
body what does work and what doesn't. Just get your
preconceptions out of the way and let it do its thing!

-----------------------------------------
THIRD INSIGHT – The Body Knows What To Do
-----------------------------------------
Upon paying closer attention to what was happening, I had a
further realization. During a Q-T Healing Circle, I was
holding an area in a student's lower abdominal area; and
yet, as I was toning, an extremely high-pitched sound
quickly formed rather than the lower tone I would have
associated with the 2nd or 3rd chakra. It later turned out
that the source of the pain in the abdomen had to do with
issues in the head area. Remembering my toning books, I
realized that the high pitch of the tone was an indication
that the source of the abdominal pain had to do with
something going on in the region of the 7th chakra.

Now, you might say, "Whoa, there – Hold on a minute!"
Depending on the exact location, wouldn't an abdominal
issue have more to do with the 2nd or 3rd chakra?

For people new to the study of the chakras and auras, let
me give a mini-introduction here. There is an energetic
field surrounding the body called the "aura." This aura has
seven layers. (Actually, each book describes the aura and
chakras a little differently, but this is a common
description.) Each layer of this energetic field is
associated with one of the chakras. As an example, the
first chakra is associated with the first layer of the
aura, the second chakra is associated with the second layer
of the aura, and so on. But these are not discrete bands
around the physical body – each layer of the aura both
surrounds and penetrates the body and each other.

To show how truly multi-layered and complex each chakra is,
let's take the 1st chakra as an example. The 1st chakra is
generally said to have a lot to do with our sense of
survival. But there can also be a 2nd chakra aspect of the
1st chakra associated with the role of sexuality in
survival. There can be a 3rd chakra aspect related to
survival and our sense of self-esteem. And so on through
all seven layers.

So simply because an area of the body is near a particular
chakra does not mean that that particular chakra is the
source of the problem.

Boy, this is getting complicated. Ah! But that's the beauty
of toning Q-T style – you don't have to figure any of this
out in advance. Just start toning, let your voice go, and
it will tell you where the source of the problem is.

But, you say, it may be easy enough to tell the
high-pitched EEEEE of the 7th chakra from the low, guttural
growl of the 1st chakra, but how can you tell the
difference between the 2nd chakra sound and the 3rd chakra
sound? First, the good news: the more you do it, the more
sophisticated your ear will get. Now, the best news: just
keep toning until the tone comes through clear, open and
full, and you don't have to worry about anything else –
once you hear that clear, full tone, you will have cleared
the energetic block at the source. (Or at least as much of
the block as the client's system will allow to be cleared
for the time being.)

-----------------------------------------
FOURTH INSIGHT – The Body Knows What To Do
-----------------------------------------
The only drawback of toning out loud is its extreme
weirdness. And it's not only the spooky, high-pitched
EEEEEEs – sometimes gurgling sounds come out, or choking
sounds, or just plain indescribable, weird sounds. Your
voice is making the sounds it needs to make to express
what's currently happening in the part of the body your
hands are sandwiching, so you don't want to artificially
pretty it up for your client's sake. And there's nothing
like hearing the transformation of a choking, constricted,
swallowed sound spontaneously turn into a clear, full, rich
tone as the area clears. Sometimes, though, it's going to
simply be tooooo weird for your poor client (if you dare
try it in the first place on someone you don't already know
very, very well....).

Thank the good Lord for non-local healing! This is a
wonderful opportunity for toning work! A recent example of
this showed me a further variation on the theme how toning
reveals the source of a problem.

Padma and I had a distant healing request from a young man
with a chronic sciatica problem which had recently gotten
much worse. I started out with my usual mid-range
"Ahhhhhh...." It quickly took on a life of its own,
changing to a very high-pitched but constricted sound which
didn't open up until about 15 minutes or so had passed.

When the distant healing felt done for the time-being,
Padma and I e-mailed the young man with our insights. In my
e-mail, I explained that my toning had become very
high-pitched, which indicated to me that the source of the
trouble was in the neck or head area. The young man
confirmed that a number of years ago he'd had an automobile
accident and that his neck hadn't been right since.

The bad news is that this was one of those old, chronic
cases which initially merely gets stirred up, and he
actually felt somewhat worse after the healing. (Sorry
about that, my friend!). The good news is that there is now
a clear indication that the key to eventually correcting
the lower back problem lies in working with the neck.

-----------------------------------------
FIFTH INSIGHT – The Body Knows What To Do!
-----------------------------------------
And so do you. The vibration of sound can often penetrate
energetic blocks when nothing else seems to be working. If
you can't find a fellow student or adventurous client who
will let you work with them through toning, I highly
recommend you experience the power of toning while doing
non-local healing. Review Richard's description of breathy
toning in the Quantum-Touch book if you overlooked that
part, because adding in the Q-T breathing rhythm does
amplify the effect of toning even more. Don't worry about
whether you're doing it right - just open your mouth and
let your voice go! It will know what to do.
