Road to Healing, Road to Hell
17 May 2007
Yes, I know the title is a tad dramatic; then again, the demonstration I experienced this past weekend was much more than a tad dramatic! I attended a workshop given by former violin-maker and current healer Deena Spear. I had seen her listed as an "Outstanding Healer of Our Time" in "Soul Medicine, "a book co-authored by Norman Shealy. (Our very own Richard Gordon was listed there, too!) She heals through the mind, and that's what she taught me and twelve other students to do this past weekend. Healing through the mind is quick – so quick that Deena has come up with a unique way to demonstrate to her students that they have indeed accomplished this: letting them experience tuning violins solely through their minds. But an even more dramatic lesson we learned this weekend was a lesson in detachment. --------------- Road to Healing --------------- So how do we tune violins through our minds? The whole first night of the workshop is devoted to grounding, "unswitching" any possible reversed polarity within ourselves and getting into an open-hearted space. We then "intend" for healing to happen. ----------- HOWEVER! ----------- There is one important caveat: we MUST "intend" in the context of a conviction that there is no "out there," no external reality. Going beyond the illusion of an external reality, we are experiencing the wholeness of our own personal dream. The violinist who is present for this purpose plays scales on an out-of-tune violin. This gives all of us students a baseline sense of its thinness, harshness, lack of resonance, and so on. Then Deena says (to use myself as an example), "Okay, Jocelyn, now tune it." I turn around and get ready to make my intention. "Done!" says Deena. "But how - ?" I sputter. "Intention happens far quicker than the mind can think. You already had the intention before you turned. As soon as you intend, just let go and allow." And to prove the accuracy of her "Done!," she asks the violinist to play the violin again. Even to my dim ear the difference is apparent – a much fuller, more resonant sound. We each do several tunings of our violins. Student by student, the reality of the effect our intentions have on "external reality" is repeated again and again. ------------- Road to Hell ------------- Now comes the demonstration which crumbled some of my ideas about healing. ------------- Demo, Part 1 ------------- Deena chooses one violin for the thirteen of us to tune as a group, and the violinist plays the scale on the tinny, untuned violin. We are to fill our hearts with love and warmth and joy. We tune the violin and – no surprise at this point – the sweetness of the new sound brings some of us to tears. ------------- Demo, Part 2 ------------- Deena again instructs us to tune the violin. But this time, we are to step out of our interior dreamtime and purposefully focus all our love and warmth and joy directly on the physical violin itself. The violin sounds WORSE than it did originally! Moreover, Deena informs us that in one particularly intense class, the violin actually exploded! (And if our minds this weekend were any indication, I bet their minds got quite blown as well!) -------------------------- Lessons in Good Intentions -------------------------- Deena warned us that what we have learned doesn't mix with more "physical" healings such as acupressure, Reiki or (in response to my question) Quantum-Touch, where we are closely focused on an "other" in need of healing Nevertheless, I did carry away some lessons which have sharpened my work with Quantum-Touch and the other hands-on forms of healing I do. None of these lessons are new to me, and they probably aren't all that new to you. It's just that I now I see I have further to go than I thought in truly actualizing these ideas in my work. ----------------------- 1. Set It and Forget It ----------------------- Although I first heard this phrase in the Supercharging class, I explicitly use it to myself for any healing intent I have toward my client. I sometimes hear people describing elaborate images they create and hold of exactly what they want for their client or loved one. But as Deena pointed out, intention happens way before you have formulated these elaborate healing scenarios. If we don't immediately let go and allow our intentions space to happen, it's difficult for it to happen at the deepest levels. ----------- 2. Detach ----------- Seeing how focusing our intention directly toward the violin gunked it up was another reminder about the importance of detaching ourselves from the person we're working on and simply allowing the energy to resonate and flow. Not only does a close, anxious attention to the effect of our work exhaust us - it impedes the operation of greater, deeper healing forces which are far beyond the limited resources of our thinking minds. -------------------- 3. Thy Will Be Done -------------------- Physician and healing researcher Larry Dossey is author of the book "Healing Words." In it, Dossey discusses a number of well-crafted scientific studies of prayer. One of his biggest surprises: the most effective prayer was "Thy Will be done." A point Deena made over and over again is that healing happens from a place much deeper than our thoughts. Getting our limited points of view out of the way allows this deeper, unknowable aspect of ourselves to operate. ----------------- To Sum It All Up: ----------------- Get out of the way and let healing happen!
---------------------------------------------------------- P.S.: If you'd like to try Deena's special grounding technique (the "Ice Cream Cone") which came to her through her friend, medium Marianne Alexander, and a uniquely powerful "unswitching" protocol she developed with Jessica Loda, D.C., go to her website at http://www.singingwoods.com and click on "Articles."
